Tall Ship Antigua - A ship with history and character
Tall Ship Antigua has a long and distinguished history in European waters. Built in 1957 at the Richard Dunston Shipyard in Thorne, Yorkshire (United Kingdom), she originally served as a fishing vessel.
After being decommissioned in the 1990s, the ship was transformed — with great respect for nautical tradition — into the characteristic three-masted vessel she is today. The conversion was carried out with exceptional attention to detail, preserving the authentic atmosphere and craftsmanship of a classic working ship while creating an elegant and comfortable sailing vessel.
Sailing characteristics
Antigua is rigged as a barkentine: the foremast carries square sails, while the main and mizzen masts are fore-and-aft rigged. This refined configuration combines efficient handling with excellent sailing performance and gives the ship her distinctive appearance under sail.
The restoration resulted in a graceful and powerful vessel with outstanding sailing characteristics and a commanding presence at sea. During the winter of 2015–2016, Antigua underwent another remarkable transformation. The vessel was lengthened by eight metres, creating additional space and comfort on board while further improving her stability and sailing behaviour.
Expedition ship for northern waters
In 2005, Antigua was acquired by her current owner, Jan Bruinsma of
Tallship Company in Franeker. Under his ownership, the ship developed into a distinctive expedition vessel for northern European waters.
Today, Antigua primarily sails the Baltic Sea and operates in Northern Norway during autumn and early winter, offering atmospheric Northern Lights and whale watching expeditions in spectacular surroundings.
The vessel is fully equipped for expedition-style cruising and carries three Zodiacs, which can be launched quickly using two separate davits. The spacious decks provide excellent panoramic viewing opportunities, while the ship’s technical installations and practical layout make her particularly suitable for voyages in northern waters and changing weather conditions.
Comfort and atmosphere
Antigua distinguishes herself through a stylish and warm interior. The atmospheric salon, finished in rich mahogany panelling, radiates the charm of a classic yacht while maintaining the comfort expected by modern travellers. A cosy ship’s bar forms the natural heart of the vessel.
In 2021, a comfortable deck saloon was added, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape — an exceptional place to experience the sea, the coastline and the northern skies in all weather conditions.
The ship accommodates 32 guests in 16 cabins, each with private bathroom facilities. Eight cabins are particularly spacious and feature twin beds on the same level, offering additional comfort and luxury. For day trips and events, Antigua is certified to carry up to 95 guests.
The spirit of exploration
Over the past seventeen years, Antigua has been extensively refitted and carefully maintained to a high standard. She combines the spirit of the great explorers of the past with the comfort, safety and elegance demanded by today’s guests.
Antigua is not simply a ship, but a fully operational and distinctive expedition vessel with a unique identity and proven reputation. An exceptional opportunity for anyone seeking a remarkable tall ship with character, capability and history.
